A man has allegedly tested positive for two illicit substances following a wild chase through busy streets near the NSW/Queensland border.

Just after 3pm on Sunday, NSW Highway Patrol units were notified that a blue SUV was being “driven dangerously” after it struck another vehicle in Tweed Heads.

Dramatic footage of the SUV swerving between narrow gaps in heavily congested traffic was captured by news helicopters.

In footage captured by Channel 7, a vehicle that has been struck in the rear swerves into the driveway of a house as the SUV speeds past.

As it moves into a busier part of the road, the SUV weaves a path between the traffic as onlookers cautiously move out of the way.

At one point, as the SUV slows down to squeeze through a gap, one man steps alongside the open driver’s-side window and appears to strike the driver with a pillow.

The man was eventually stopped by police and allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.181 – more than three times the legal limit.

He was also drug tested and allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine and cannabis.

Police said they would also “allege in court the driver failed to exchange details after he had hit another vehicle twice and drove off in a dangerous manner”.

The man will appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on June 1.
