Melbourne are bracing for the likelihood of being without Steven May for multiple games after scans confirmed the star defender has a fractured larynx.

May was a late withdrawal from the Demons’ round-one clash with GWS on Sunday, after an accidental knock to the throat at training two days earlier.

It is the same type of injury that Max Gawn suffered in a training mishap in December, which put the Dees’ captain out of action for six weeks.

Melbourne football manager Alan Richardson said the club would take a cautious approach with two-time All-Australian backman May’s recovery.

“At this stage, our medical team does not believe the injury is as significant as what Max Gawn sustained earlier in the year,” Richardson said in a statement.

“We will assess Steven further next week, which will give us a clearer picture of the recovery timeline.”

May, 33, was replaced by fellow veteran Tom McDonald against the Giants.

May played 19 games last season and missed the tail-end of the campaign with fractured ribs.
