Treasurer Jim Chalmers has called an urgent meeting with state and territory counterparts as he eyes ways to rein in federal spending on the ballooning National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The NDIS costs taxpayers $50bn per year and is expected grow to $100bn within a decade.

Health Minister Mark Butler will announce the overhaul of the NDIS on Wednesday.

“We have all got a stake in this,” Mr Chalmers told a press conference on Monday.

“We have all got an interest in making sure that we provide that high standard of care in a way that we can afford in a sustainable way so that the important work of the NDIS and all the people who work in the NDIS, who benefit from the NDIS and are supported by the NDIS are done so in a way that we can continue to afford.”
