A full lockdown is underway at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, with anyone on campus told to hide and silence their phones.
Early reports claim around 20 people have been shot, however, authorities have not yet given an update on injuries or fatalities.
Students have been told to “lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice”.
US President Donald Trump says he has been briefed on the shooting.
“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
Before Mr Trump said the suspect was in custody, Brown University sent additional alerts to staff and students saying the gunman was still at large.
“Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s),” the statement says.
“Brown coordinating with multiple law enforcement agencies on site. Emergency medical on scene.”
Multiple shots have been heard, most recently near Governor Street, within the campus.
More to come…
