An elderly man has died after a woman allegedly cut essential gas services to two Sydney hospitals.

Police allege the woman entered Sutherland Hospital in Caringbah shortly after midnight on Tuesday, before cutting gas and water mains and activating fire hoses.

A little more than an hour later, the woman allegedly then entered the grounds of a private hospital on the same street and also switched off the gas mains.

Police were told that afternoon that a 72-year-old man had died in one of the hospitals at about 2.30am the same day.

Doctors issued a death certificate and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
