A woman has died after a car left the Kwinana Freeway and slammed into a tree in Baldivis late on Monday night.

Police say a blue Ford Falcon sedan was travelling south on the freeway about 11.20pm when the vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

On arrival, firefighters found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

The 44-year-old female passenger suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The 40-year-old male driver was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kwinana Freeway southbound remains closed at Mundijong Road, with motorists urged to seek alternative routes as peak-hour traffic builds.
