Shocking footage of a brazen daylight attempted carjacking in Melbourne’s inner suburbs has been released, with bystanders swooping in to fight off a man..

In the dramatic footage, a man approaches a woman’s Mercedes sedan on Swan St near Richmond Railway Station and tries to steal it.

Police said “good Samaritans” who saw the scene unfolding quickly rushed to the woman’s aide, with one bystander arming himself with a golf club and forcing the man to get out of the car.

“With the Mercedes boxed in by a passerby’s vehicle, the (alleged) offender fled on foot from the Mercedes into an awaiting white Nissan Navara, registration 1OL9CF, which was last seen travelling southbound on Cremorne Street,” police said in a statement.

The owner of the Mercedes was uninjured, but one of the bystanders appeared to hurt their face.

Police are now appealing to the public to help identify a man they believe can assist them with their inquiries.

The incident took place on August 19 about 4:50pm.

The man is of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, aged in his mid to late 20s and about 183cm tall with a solid build.

He was wearing a black puffer jacket, black trackpants, white runners and a beanie.
