Higher interest rates and market volatility were already making it harder to get large deals done, and now some are concerned that the European Central Bank has thrown a spanner into one of the few remaining opportunities to generate fees. The so-called Danish Compromise is a once-niche bit of EU regulation designed to reduce the capital burden on banks that own insurance businesses. But it came with a loophole — christened the “Danish…

CBS News has obtained a list of 365 federal grant programs halted this week by the Justice Department, disrupting programs to help victims of hate crime and sex trafficking, children who’ve suffered violence, and refugees. The department also paused programs aimed at reducing school shootings, efforts to combat domestic terror and an Emmett Till cold case initiative in the Southeast. At least some of the grants were halted in memos sent Tuesday to nonprofit organizations by the Justice Department. The memos alerted program operators that the projects no longer “effectuate” Justice Department priorities. The cancellation of the federal grants caused disruptions at…

The lone Republican vote in the Senate last month to protect consumers from bank overdraft fees came from an unlikely Democratic ally: Senator Josh Hawley, the archconservative from Missouri best known for calling out “wokeness” in all sectors of society, and for raising his fist to offer solidarity with supporters of President Trump hours before the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. And yet the overdraft vote was hardly the first time Mr. Hawley had stood apart from his Republican colleagues. In 2023 he introduced a bill to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $25 per month, which died in committee for…
Anthony Albanese’s pre-election interview on 7.30 was sometimes testy, as host Sarah Ferguson repeatedly sought clearer answers.
The student attempted to flee to a nearby lakeside park, where he jumped into the lake, but was apprehended just 12 minutes after the initial report, according to Cheongju police. The 18-year-old was taken to a hospital as he suffered minor injuries. “We are trying to determine the details and motive,” a local police official told AFP. Police later confirmed they confiscated four different weapons, including a box cutter, from the student. “In this case, the student had the items in their bag from the time they arrived at school, so it seems that others (the teachers) were not aware…
United States military strikes in Yemen have killed 68 people and wounded 47 as they hit a detention centre holding African migrants, according to Houthi-affiliated media reports. The strike in the Saada governorate, a Houthi stronghold, is the latest incident during a decade of conflict to kill African migrants from Ethiopia and other nations who risk crossing Yemen for a chance to work in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for military operations in the Middle East, refused to offer details of the latest strikes but acknowledged carrying out more than 800 hits on targets in…

Roberts Jr. asked the lawyer who had represented the government to return to the lectern.“You have just presented your 160th argument before this court, and I understand it is intended to be your last,” the chief justice told the lawyer, Edwin S.
