Columbia University appears to be ready and willing to work with President Donald Trump and his administration. The university’s interim president. Katrina Armstrong, issued a letter on Friday in response to the Trump administration cutting $400 million in federal grants to the school. Federal agencies that severed their ties with Columbia said it was because of the Ivy League institution’s “continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.”Armstrong says in her letter that the funding cuts will “immediately impact research and other critical functions,” but she does not dismiss the Trump administration’s claims. Rather, Armstrong writes that…
The Department of National Defence has awarded an $8-billion deal to Irving Shipbuilding to start building three new destroyers for the Royal Canadian Navy, the Liberal government said Saturday. Two men, barefoot and wearing traditional loincloths around their waists, tussled with each other on a stage transformed to look like a sumo ring.A fighting consultant, who had been observing the rehearsal nearby, stepped in to offer advice: The men’s arm movements were too straight; their motions needed to be smoother and more circular. Moments later, the two actors were at it again: reaching out, shifting their weight and then pushing off each other in a grappling exchange.New York theatergoers have seen it all, including shows about sports — which are not uncommon. But rarer, nonexistent even, is a theatrical…
KASSEM IS HIS company’s official hype man, announcing each reissue campaign with excited but unfancy YouTube videos, grinning and nodding his head while flipping through LPs, as if he were savoring a Louisiana étouffée.And it works. Since 2021, the company has sold more than 35,000 copies of Miles Davis’s 1959 landmark “Kind of Blue,” in boxed sets that went for $100 and $150. That success gave Kassem the idea for what he titled “Birth of the Blue”: four tracks that Davis recorded with the same players a year prior, which had been anthologized before but never given the full LP…

Evangelical Christian leaders who delivered votes to President Trump are now pressing him to declare that Israel can claim ownership of the West Bank, based on a promise God made to the Jews in the Bible. They are seeking a way to pave a path toward annexation of territory that is widely viewed internationally as intended for a future Palestinian state. Israel seized the territory as part of a war between it, Jordan, Egypt and Syria in 1967 and has occupied it since. In recent years, the right-wing government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been encouraging Jewish settlers to build…
House Republicans on Saturday unveiled a measure to fund the government through Sept. 30, boosting spending on the military and daring Democrats to oppose it and risk being blamed for a government shutdown that would begin after midnight Friday. The 99-page legislation would slightly decrease spending overall from last year’s funding levels, but would increase spending for the military by $6 billion, in a nod to the concerns of G.O.P. defense hawks that stopgap measures would hamstring the Pentagon. It would not include any funds for any earmarks for projects in lawmakers’ districts or states, saving roughly $13 billion, according to…
