For years, the U.S. government has warned travelers they will soon need a Real ID to board domestic flights, only to keep postponing the deadline. But “soon” appears to be real this time.As of May 7, a standard driver’s license or state ID will no longer pass muster at airport security checkpoints, the Department of Homeland Security says. Passengers will instead need to present a security-enhanced, star-emblazoned Real ID or another approved form of identification like a passport. The change, nearly 20 years in the making, is meant to enhance security by setting a more consistent standard for state-issued documentation, according…
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office recently charged a dozen people with breaking into a Stanford University campus building, barricading themselves inside and vandalizing administrative offices during a destructive anti-Israel protest at the elite liberal Northern California school last June. Prosecutors said the 12 masked people, whose ages ranged from 19 to 32, allegedly “broke windows and furniture, splashed fake blood and disabled security cameras.” There was allegedly hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office. Some experts predict the number of akiya across Japan will more than double to 23 million, or one in three houses, by 2038. Most akiya are not in living condition before renovation, with the worst at risk of collapse. These empty homes are either “very old”, or have been left to “become a garbage dump” when they could not find a buyer, Misaki said. AKIYA A CHALLENGE FOR TOWN REJUVENATION The latest figures show that Uda has about 1,000 akiya, 300 more than five years ago. The local government is looking at how these neglected homes can attract residents as…
Patience. If I could boil down one thing that separates winners from suckers in the NBA, that’s it. The winners have it, and they prey on the chumps who don’t over and over again. The Phoenix Suns are just the latest, and most extreme, in a long line of examples, and it’s left them in a position where moving the franchise’s all-time leading scorer is about the only card left to play.I’ll get to that latter point in a second, but first, the big picture.Patience costs nothing. It requires no advanced degree, special relationships or analytics gurus. Yet I’d argue it’s…
Bangkok, Thailand – Aung, a high school English teacher, figured it was high time to leave Myanmar the day the military generals who took over the country stepped up enforcement of a long-dormant conscription law they had dredged up. That was at the end of January, a little more than 11 months after the generals announced plans for widespread conscription, in order to cope with their military’s mounting desertions and battlefield losses to armed groups fighting back against their 2021 coup. The first contingent of 5,000 conscripts into Myanmar’s military started their basic training one year ago this week. Thousands…
Russia released Ksenia Karelina, a dual U.S.-Russian national who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for treason in August last year, in a new prison swap on Thursday. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed her release in a social media post early Thursday, but offered no information about the terms of her release. The Wall Street Journal first reported Karelina’s release, saying she was freed in a swap arranged by the two countries’ intelligence agencies, and a CIA official later told CBS News that the agency had played a central role in the deal on behalf of the U.S. government.”American…
President Trump on Thursday threatened additional tariffs and other sanctions against Mexico over a long-running water dispute in a potential escalation of tensions with one of America’s biggest trading partners. In a social media post, Mr. Trump accused Mexico of failing to provide 1.3 million acre-feet of water — or more than 420 billion gallons — under a 1944 treaty mediating the distribution of water from three rivers, the Rio Grande, the Colorado and the Tijuana.“Mexico has been stealing the water from Texas farmers,” Mr. Trump said, adding that “we will keep escalating consequences, including TARIFFS and, maybe even SANCTIONS, until…
