Israel’s ongoing military assault on Iran has already become one of the most consequential cross-border strikes in the region’s recent history. Far more than a targeted operation against missile silos or nuclear facilities, it has included high-profile assassinations and sophisticated cyberattacks. Among the most significant developments so far has been the assassination of several senior Iranian commanders, including Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein Salami and the head of its Aerospace Force, Amir Ali Hajizadeh. These targeted killings represent the most severe blow to Iran’s military leadership since the 1980-1988 war with Iraq. Yet, beneath the surface, the…

Blake Miguez announced a U.S. Senate bid, declaring in a campaign video that he is “running for the U.S. Senate because Bill Cassidy sucks.”The video highlights old footage of Republican Sen. A woman who says she endured cruel and unusual punishment in a Nova Scotia prison has settled a civil lawsuit she filed against the federal attorney general almost five years ago. Lisa Adams filed the lawsuit after she was placed in solitary confinement in what is commonly referred to as a dry cell for 16 days.Dry cells have no toilet or running water. They are used to monitor inmates to determine if they have ingested contraband or hidden it inside a body cavity.Adams’ lawyer issued a brief statement confirming the settlement, but Mike Dull said he could not disclose terms of the settlement…

For more than three decades, a familiar refrain has echoed from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: Iran is on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Since 1992, when Netanyahu addressed Israel’s Knesset as an MP, he has consistently claimed that Tehran is only years away from acquiring a nuclear bomb. “Within three to five years, we can assume that Iran will become autonomous in its ability to develop and produce a nuclear bomb,” he declared at the time. The prediction was later repeated in his 1995 book, Fighting Terrorism. The sense of imminent threat has repeatedly shaped Netanyahu’s engagement with…
Democrat Abigail Spanberger is emphasizing her life and career as she aims to become the next governor of Virginia at a time when her national party is searching for answers on how to win over voters after an election cycle filled with setbacks. The Spanberger campaign’s new advertisement for the general election, first reported by CBS News, shows her reflecting on the various kinds of hallways she’s walked through, starting with her education at Virginia’s J.R. Tucker High School, before quickly pivoting to the CIA, where she was a case officer, and then to the Capitol, where she was a bipartisan-minded…
Earlier this month, the US Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs published an oblique notice on its website stating that it had received a new rule proposal from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. If that seems a little dull, consider that the proposed rule’s title was even more mind-numbing: “Modifications to Supplementary Leverage Capital Requirements for Large Banking Organizations; Total Loss-Absorbing Capacity Requirements for US Global Systemically Important Bank Holding Companies.”And yet, in some corners of the US finance industry, this has probably been greeted with the equivalent of a Mexican (soon to be rebranded American by the Trump administration, we…
All eyes in Builders Vision’s Chicago office, in the fashionable Fulton Market district, are trained on a large screen showing a coiled serpent eating its own tail. On a video link, the day’s keynote speaker is enthusing how, contrary to first impressions, the ouroboros’s self-destruction is actually part of its eternal recreation. From their seats in the 16th-floor office’s lounge area, the audience follows the speaker’s every word, lapping up her invocation to “rewild our imaginations”, nodding at her assertion that “every tradition was once an innovation”.The workshop participants all seem cut from the same cloth: bright-eyed, luxe sneakers and slacks,…
