Pope Leo Warns of A.I. Risks in His First Papal Encyclical
Pope Leo XIV presented his first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas,” in which he outlined his desire to protect human dignity and agency in an age when technology threatens to replace people in many professional and social roles.
-
“Artificial intelligence now demands to be disarmed, freed from logics that turn it into an instrument of of domination, exclusion and death. Like nuclear energy, it must be at the service of all, and of the common good. Decisions about technology must never be separated from conscience and responsibility. Let’s not fear artificial intelligence, but constantly keep the question of the human in play. We cannot be careless with our most powerful technical instruments.” “I am grateful to His Holiness and to the church for taking up this work of discernment. We need moral voices that the incentives cannot bend. Today is just the beginning — the start of a long collaboration between those of us who are building this and those who can see what we, from the inside, cannot.” “Amen. Thank you very much.”
